The Ultimate Burnt Beauty

Santorini is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 135,5 km, northeast from Heraklion. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a caldera. The island is actually a group of islands consisting of Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni in the southernmost part of the Cyclades.
Santorini is one of the most famous of the Greek islands, because of its whitewashed, cube-shaped buildings adorned with blue accents, steep cliffs, tangerine sunsets that light up the sky and sea and as well for its volcano that is one of the few active volcanoes on Greek and European land .The islands that form Santorini came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activity; twelve huge eruptions occurred, one every 20,000 years approximately, and each violent eruption caused the collapse of the volcano’s central part creating a large crater (caldera). The volcano, however, managed to recreate itself over and over again.

Santorini was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of meters deep. It may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami.

It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera.
