The Isolated Island & more secret bays

Elounda is a small town on the northern coast of the island of Crete. It is part of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos.

The road into Elounda from Agios Nikolaos is approximately 12 km in length and follows the shore as it climbs to the top of a small mountain. On a clear day it is possible to see the whole of Mirabello Bay and all the way to the eastern tip of Crete.

Plaka is a tiny picturesque village located 16 km north of Agios Nikolaos town and 5 km from the cosmopolitan resort of Elounda. It is an old fishing village which  overlooks the  island of Spinalonga and Kolokytha Peninsula.

Spinalonga has appeared in novels, television series because it used to be a former leper colony that was finally abandoned in 1957.  In more modern time, Spinalonga is known as ‘The Island of the Living Dead’. There is much to discover on this small islet, from Spinalonga Fortress for a glimpse into its rocky past as well as breathtaking views to The Church of St George, which dates back to the 17th Century.

Kolokytha is a small island just opposite the Peninsula of Spinalonga, 12km north of Agios Nikolaos and close to Elounda. Opposite the island there is the fantastic beach of Agios Loukas, mostly known as Kolokytha.

If you want to stay isolated, you can walk southwards (beyond the right edge of the beach), where you will find two secluded bays with sand, rocks and several tamarisk trees. They cannot in any case reach the beauty of Kolokytha, but it is a right choice for nudists and those wanting to avoid crowded places, even during the tourist months. The area is called Vagi and is named after the Greek word vagia, which is the Cretan date palm. Next to the beach you can still see the remains of a small query of limestone.
